Jamie Sternke

Head Coach

Bio

I have always enjoyed being active, from gymnastics and basketball in my early years, to competing in cross-country and track in high school and college. After struggling with an injury in college, I was introduced to the sport of disc golf by Adam (now husband). Not only did we enjoy traveling throughout the United States playing in disc golf tournaments, but it also scratched that competitive itch that I lost when I was unable to compete in cross-country and track.

After our son was born, I was looking to spend time with him and focus on my fitness. A few months after he was born, my mother suddenly passed away in a car accident. I found that, for me, exercise was the best form of therapy. I found CrossFit, and the community and competition aspects were a perfect fit for me. Through CrossFit, I push myself harder, have more fun, and make stronger connections with others. I have felt much support within this fitness community, and I appreciate every new chance to help others discover the impact it can have for them. I found Detour through our family! My husband’s sister has been a part of the Detour community for years, and we would drop in when visiting. We decided in 2017 to move to Rochester to be closer to family, and Detour is the perfect fit. Detour offers a supportive and encouraging community that fosters positive relationships and friendships. The coaches are invested and care about their members, the programming is effective and sustainable, and the quantity, variety, and quality of equipment is unmatched. To us, the Detour community is our extended family. In 2015, with our kids the ages 3 and 1, I was deciding whether to go back to work as a School Psychologist or choose a different path. Already loving the personal connections and positive influence that CrossFit has had on me, I decided to pursue a role as Personal Trainer and CrossFit coach while still staying home with kids. I started coaching a kids class and personal training, then shortly after started coaching CrossFit classes. Long having a desire to help others, it is rewarding to encourage others to work toward their goals. Becoming a coach allows me to make connections through fitness, empathy, kindness, and mutual respect. I find joy in partnering with others in their pursuit of fitness, empowering them to overcome adversity in all areas of life. As a coach, I love to instill community and see connections develop. It is incredible to see the members support one another not only during classes but also outside the gym. Whether I am coaching or working out in a class, I love talking with others, getting to know them, and having fun while pursuing fitness and our own unique goals. My favorite moments as a coach include reflecting back with individuals on the progress they have made within the gym. Improved movement patterns, increased confidence, being able to do something for the first time, meeting and exceeding goals, and seeing the impact that hard work and consistency has brought is incredibly rewarding. #ThisIsDetour
